About the course

Australian 4WD & Advanced Driver Education strongly recommended for operators to undertake a 4WD course, prior to undertaking this recovery competency.

This course is for professionals require vehicle recovery equipment, or travel to remote areas

This course has been developed and contextualised for those people who are:

Issued or required to use a range of vehicle recovery equipment, for example vehicle mounted winch systems; and
Those who may travel to remote areas and may need to have the skills, knowledge and confidents to recover their vehicle, should this be required.

This course provides that source of vital knowledge for the 4WD operator and offers a complete understanding of advanced recovery techniques.

This course can be delivered as a 2 day option should people not hold the prerequisite qualification of Drive a 4WD vehicle. The two day course option covers the Drive a 4WD Vehicle in Difficult Terrain and Coordinate recovery of 4WD vehicles.

A4ADE Specific Advanced Recovery Training

Includes, but not limiting to the following teaching elements, (In addition to the course elements, listed below):

Theory component is combined within the practical elements and covers the following:

Introduction to new recovery equipment (soft shackles, Kinetic Rope, Red Ring).
What sticks a vehicle.
Types of recovery equipment available, characteristics, safety precautions and their ratings.
Rating calculations of ground and artificial anchors.
Difference between SWL and WWL.
Mechanical advantages in a 2:1, 3:1 direct and indirect recovery.
Dyneema cable vs steal cable.
Workplace health, safety and environmental policies.

Practical training elements include:

Inspection, benefits and disadvantage of recovery equipment.
Understanding the differences, Australian Standards and safe use of equalising strap, tow strap, snatch strap, tree trunk protection and extension straps.
Safe use of a High lift jack and an exhaust jack.
Safe use of a Snatch Strap, Kentic Rope and Tow Strap
Safe operations of a tirfur winch (manual winch).
Safe operations of a vehicle mounted winch .
Coordinate a recovery of a 4WD vehicle, controller and operator.
Maintain recovery equipment.

Course elements

Plan 4×4 recovery

Identify and follow occupational health and safety (OHS), environmental, legislative and organisational requirements relevant to 4×4 recovery
Survey site to identify hazards, assess risks and select suitable strategy
Select personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate to type of recovery operation
Inform appropriate personnel of your locationDetermine potential environmental impact of recovery

Operate in a safe manner

Consider operating variables, define danger zone and apply strategies to reduce risk and environmental impact during recovery
Use rated recovery equipment correctly
Use appropriate communication during recovery operations
Repair environmental damage where possible

Apply recovery method appropriate for the desired outcome

Determine recovery method based on the terrain conditions and pulling techniques required of the situation
Determine the resources required and their availability
Communicate the recovery method selected and inform supervisor of your decision if appropriate
Set up an exclusion zone
Maintain communication with others to explain progress in recovery

Demonstrate the safe use of jacks

Identify hazards with the safe positioning of jacks
Use safe operating procedures while using a jack to lift a vehicle
Demonstrate safe recovery of a vehicle using a jack

Maintain vehicle recovery equipment

Apply correct maintenance procedures for recovery equipment
Document equipment maintenance according to organisational procedures

Course Timings

The course start time is at 07:15 and concluding at approximately 3pm.

A4ADE Practical Training Area

A4ADE exclusive Driver Training Facilities at Kurwongbah offers terrain which is similar to the terrain that people would be required to drive on in their everyday driving as part of their job. This offers superior opportunities for the development of skills and techniques in these environments rather than a simulated environment or a “make-shift” area artificially developed for driver training.

A4ADE Training Areas

A4ADE have exclusive Driver Training Facility at Kurwongbah, North of Brisbane.

For group bookings additional training areas to those listed above include Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Mt Isa, Moranbah, Roma, Toowoomba, however not limited to these areas.

Corporate/Group Booking Training Areas

A4ADE are able to plan, develop and deliver specific course programs for groups or corporate, on request.

On-Site Training

Australian 4WD & Advanced Driver Education specialise in the design and implementation of client specific and site specific driver training and education. Training can be delivered for groups on any site (if suitable terrain is available), for group bookings. All courses are portable allowing staff to be trained in locations familiar to their day-to-day use of 4WD and other light vehicles and can be delivered to ensure minimal disruption to shift routine.

What course participants will require to undertake the course

Your 4WD Vehicle with mounted winch systems (one vehicle can be used for up to 2 participants from the same organisation.
Should you not have access to a 4WD vehicle, A4ADE will supply a 4WD vehicle with a mounted winch system and all the equipment required for the course; and
Your vehicle will need at least half a tank of fuel.
Any recovery equipment supplied with the vehicle. Note: please do not purchase any recovery equipment prior to the course, unless discussed with us. Recovery equipment required will be discussed, during the training.
Driving license (that will be required for checking prior to course commencement).
Appropriate clothing – this should be compliant with your companies policy however at a minimum must comprise of long sleeved shirt, long pants, closed shoes with good soles and hat.
Sunscreen and insect repellent.
Pad and pen.
Morning tea and a light lunch with plenty of drinking water in summer months.

Vehicle Hire

A4ADE do have vehicles available for use. The cost of these vehicles includes, vehicle hire for completion of the course, fuel, recovery equipment (where required), cleaning and wear/tear on brakes and tyres.

Vehicle hire fee

1 day vehicle hire is $155.00 per person, per day.

Please Note

The vehicle maybe hired by other course participants, meaning that each vehicle hire may be shared by two participants. This will not have any impact on the amount of drive time that each hirer will experience.

At times, there maybe more than one vehicle available, that will allow each vehicle hirer to experience a variety of 4WD types.

If you wish to have exclusive use of a vehicle, then this can be arranged and would be at a cost of $200.00 per vehicle per day.
