Australia-wide 4WD training with an emphasis on practicality

Australian 4WD Training operates all across Australia with purpose-built training facilities. You can come to our facilities as a team or as an individual for any of our nationally recognised 4WD training programs.

Or, we can develop customised training programs that still gain your team members the relevant accreditation and deliver it at your facilities.

We have industry-leading facilities in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Adelaide, Devonport and Launceston.

Come and train at our built-for-purpose facilities in North Brisbane

Australian 4WD & Advanced Driver Education has our own training facility where we conduct all of our courses, in particular our 4WD and Defensive Driving training programs. Designed and constructed by Kev Williams, this facility is built to offer superior and realistic opportunities for you to develop skills, confidence, and techniques within a natural environment.

This is different to many Australian 4WD driving courses that use a simulated environment or a make-shift area artificially developed for driver training.

Approximately 1000 acres
4WD bush terrain, suited for AWD and 4WD, with various degrees of slopes
Road section to conduct a practical driver awareness activity
Slalom (zigzag or wavy) area to conduct correct steering methods
An emergency braking area (both concrete and gravel surfaces)
Suitable for light, medium and heavy rigid vehicles
Suitable for manoeuvring trailers (reversing and braking exercises)

Located just 40 minutes north of Brisbane’s CBD

Australian 4WD Training facilities are located in Kurwongbah, just 40 minutes north of Brisbane’s CBD.

A built-for-purpose training facility for practical driver training

Emergency braking slab

A 120m x 6m wide (15 x 20m at one end) cement slab for emergency braking manoeuvres and slalom circuit on a firm surface. This slab can be wet down to demonstrate dry and wet road surfaces and Anti-locking Braking System (ABS) stopping

Gravel braking

120m x 20m wide gravel surface area to demonstrate the differences and techniques for braking on gravel surfaces, including ABS (both the benefits and disadvantages).

Introduction 4WD training area

Incorporating a circuit for 2WD and 4WD high-range activity and 4WD low-range (1st gear and 2nd gear) with moderate turns and ascent or descent. A watercourse of approximately 20m long at a depth of 300 – 500 millilitres.

The 3-ways

This provides individual practical driving activities that incorporate decisions on high-range or low-range (hill descent control, 2nd gear start) while negotiating ascents and descents, mud, water crossings (200mils), and washouts.

Figure 8 track

This has two tracks, including tighter turns and small steeper ascent/descent. This area has a clearing of 100m x 20m gravel surfaces on which steering exercises and emergency braking can be conducted.

Centre track

This is for 4WD high-range driving that has two tracks for 4WD low-range driving that includes tighter turns and steeper ascent/descent and side slopes.

Three steeper track

A long steep track, Approximately 35 – 52 degrees.

Touring track

An individual touring track that incorporates all of the above.

Wet weather tracks

This is used for wet weather driving training. The hills are in the clearing, so if a learner gets it wrong, there is no harm or vehicle damage. This area also has an emergency braking exercise.

4WD high-range defensive driving circuit

This road is used to conduct driver scanning and hazard awareness exercises. The local council and QLD Police have approved Australian 4WD Training to conduct these activities, with conditions.

Real 4WD vehicle

A real 4WD vehicle (that’s had the panels removed) for participants to observe the components and how a part-time 4WD vehicle works.

Permitted to operate in these conditions

Australian 4WD Training has a commercial operating permit to conduct 4WD sand courses at Bribie Island and Tewantin

While our purpose-built facilities have been thoughtfully designed to replicate a wide variety of on-site applications, there is no site more practical for your team than your own work site. Australian 4WD Training has a team of expert trainers who are comprehensively qualified in the material we teach. It’s our expertise in this space that allows us to customise the materials to suit your organisation and develop tailored training programs.

These programs still provide you and your team with nationally recognised qualifications in 4WD driving, but they are highly specialised and relevant to the work you do in your organisation.
