The single greatest risk that most drivers will face while working will be serious injury or death during road travel. On average, four to five people are killed and approximately 220 people are hospitalised every day from road crashes on Australian roads.

Since record keeping began in 1925, there have been approximately 180,000 road fatalities nationally. Each one of these people was a valued person to their families – a grandmother/grandfather; mother/father; wife/husband; boyfriend/girlfriend; daughter/son; brother/sister and a mate or work colleague.

With 180,000 people dying on our roads, it has had a dramatic affect on a lot of people, families, friends, work colleagues and emergency services. It is estimated that one fatality affects approximately 20 lives. Therefore 180,000 fatalities on Australian roads have affected approximately 3.6 million other lives.

The monetary cost of road crashes is an estimated $15 billion annually (an average of $40 million a day). One fatality from a vehicle crash can cost up to $1.8 million.

One serious injury from a vehicle incident (requiring hospital treatment) may cost up to $408,000. It is estimated to cost on average $5,000 a day for one person to be treated in hospital.

Almost 60% of work-related deaths in Australia involve a vehicle. Research indicates that around 25% of all crashes (between 400 and 500 fatal crashes per year) involve a vehicle being driven for work purposes.

What is the risk of being involved in a vehicle crash? The risk is a lot higher than most people estimate. Driving a vehicle is one of the highest risk activities that people do on a daily basis.

Causes of crashes are: 57% human factor, 28% human and environment, 6% vehicle and human factors, 3% human, environment and vehicle, 3% environment factor only, 2% vehicle factor only and 1% vehicle and environment.
